Standard Operating Procedure

Clonal Propagation with CharCoir Coco Coins

A field-tested protocol for consistent, vigorous rooting in coco coins. Hydration timing, sticking technique, humidity management, and dryback-driven irrigation — the critical steps only.

Before you start

Match the coin to your substrate

Coco coins root best when the veg and flower substrate is also coco coir. The reason is an osmotic gradient: coco is "thirsty" and wicks water out of a neighboring rockwool plug faster than rockwool can pull from a coco coin.

Do this. Pair coco coins with a coco coir veg/flower bed for the most consistent rooting and transplant success.
Acceptable. Coco coin into a rockwool block works — the coin holds enough water to bridge the transition.
Avoid. A rockwool plug into a coco bed. Coco wicks the plug dry and stresses the clone.
Field planting. Same rule outdoors — native soil pulls a rockwool plug dry, while a coco coin holds enough water to root into the ground and hold vigor early.

Prep

Mix the soak & clone solution

One solution does double duty — it hydrates the coins and can store or harden cuttings. Stabilize pH before adding iodine.

Adjust and stabilize pH to 5.6–5.8 before the next step.
Add 2 mL horticultural-grade iodine per gallon. This same solution can be used to store and harden cuttings.

Hydration

Soak the coins — timing is everything

Coins are engineered to hydrate to the correct field capacity on their own. Hit the time window and never squeeze them.

Submerge fully

Add coins to enough solution that they stay fully submerged even after they expand.

Soak 2–4 hours

Minimum 2 hr for a uniform batch; 3 hr is the target. Do not exceed 4 hr.

Do not squeeze

Coins hydrate to the ideal field capacity by design. Squeezing to shed water ruins the air-to-water ratio.

Never soak past 4 hours. The coir inside the mesh begins to release into the solution, creating batch inconsistency.

Set up

Spacing drives even light and airflow across the canopy — the foundation for a uniform batch.

Transfer soaked coins straight into multi-cell nursery trays. Stagger them so no coin sits directly beside another — this opens the canopy for light and keeps air moving, which drives the uniform dryback you'll rely on later.

Technique

Cut & stick the clones

Prep your station first — rooting hormone, clean cutting surface, razor or scalpel, and a waste receptacle. Then work in small batches until the coins feel familiar.

Fresh basal cut

Recut the base at a 45–90° angle to the stem, on a marked board so every clone is the same length (even canopy).

Dip the base only

Apply rooting hormone to the basal cut end only — keep it off the upper stem.

Insert to ¾ depth

Push the cutting to ¾ of the coin's height, gripping the stem base as close to the coin as possible.

Return & cover

Place the coin back in the checkerboard. Dome with upper vents open, or fill a rack cover to at least ¾.

Lower-half resistance? Lift the coin and give the solid lower half a light squeeze to loosen it — never to the point of expressing moisture. Then insert to ¾.
New to coins? Work just 1–3 cuttings at a time to build feel and keep insertion depth consistent.

Environment · the signature step

Humidity management, Day 1 → 11

Hold high humidity through the first 7–9 days to slow moisture loss and drive a uniform initial dryback — the trigger for callus and roots. Exchange fresh air every single day.

Open 1.5 hours. Watch turgor — close at the first sign of wilt. No wilt → safe to leave open for full fresh-air exchange.

Water

Irrigate on drybacks, not on a clock

Drybacks prevent damping-off and force the high air-to-water ratio that callus (parenchymal) tissue needs to form roots. Let the coins tell you when.

Rooting window & transplant

Run correctly, coins produce healthy roots between Day 9 and 12 across a wide range of cultivars — tight enough to hold your transplant schedule without buffer time between cycles.

Transplant into your coco bed once the root mass is established and clones hold turgor with domes off. Because coins keep enough water content, they root cleanly into the next substrate — no rockwool-to-coco wicking penalty.
